A Hit at Sail Rock Cafe
We spent a week in July experiencing the culinary delights of Northland's many restaurants and cafes. One such delight and real find was Sail Rock Cafe at beautiful Mangawhai heads. Sail Rock's owner Margaret Fish, takes great pride in sourcing local produce and stunning wines. Her menu boasts fresh fish, oysters, mussels, squid and award winning NZ Angus steak. Margaret takes time to ensure that what she offers on the plate is perfectly matched by the wines she recommends.
One lazy afternoon, Margaret and I enjoyed a plate of black pepper squid - Sail Rock's signature dish. She told me tales of how people come from far and wide to taste this culinary delight. Our taste buds were truly awakened as we shared a bottle of Ash Ridge Sauvignon Blanc and ate the squid, dipping it in garlic aioli and licking the sauce from our fingers! We agreed that it was the perfect food match.
Margaret is now recommending Ash Ridge wines to her customers. We are delighted that are wines are featuring on Sail Rocks wine list - a list which is carefully chosen to ensure that boutique, premium New Zealand wines are enjoyed with the best local produce.
To get a real taste of Northland, I strongly recommend that you follow the Northland Food and Wine trail and in particular that you pay Sail Rock a visit. You certainly can't leave the region without trying Margaret's black pepper squid with a glass of Ash Ridge Savvy. Cheers!
