The Winemakers
Faces Behind the Wine
Two young families, Jon and Emma Peet, and Chris and Sonya Wilcock have come together to bring you Ash Ridge wines. Our joint belief that wine quality starts in the vineyard, has led us to work together to bring you some the best local varietals from two unique vineyard sites in Hawke's Bay. We aim to produce single vineyard wines that truly reflect their origin, through our hands on approach to vineyard management and the winemaking process.
Jon and Emma Peet emigrated from Oxfordshire, England six years ago with a dream of owning a boutique vineyard. This became a reality with the purchase of a piece of land on Ngatarawa Road, in the heart of premium Hawkes Bay Wine Country. The land is on a prominent ridge of ash pumice, and combined with magestic views of the Ruahine Ranges, the name Ash Ridge truly sums up the essence of the location.
Jon is a soil scientist with 20 years experience in environmental management. A long held desire to own a vineyard led to the decision to switch careers to become a full time grapegrower. After six years hands on experience and combined with a wealth of knowledge from telling others how to farm, Ash Ridge is truly seeing the benefits of Jons hands on efforts by producing exceptional fruit.
Chris and Sonya Wilcock recently brought their young family home to New Zealand after many years abroad. They have been developing their vineyard, Cardoness for the last eight years. Cardoness is named after an old family holiday location on the West Coast of Scotland.
Chris has spent the last 15 years working in Foreign Exchange trading rooms all over the world. After living in London, Singapore, Sydney and Zurich, and with a long term desire to move out of the office and into the fields, the family finally closed the door on city living and relocated to the Hawkes Bay in early 2008. Time will tell if an extensive learning period whilst consuming wine will translate into the production side, however the early signs are good.
